About us
We're two women supporting good organisations to do great things.
Shortwork is a participatory research social enterprise based in Liverpool with clients across the UK. We provide bespoke research and evaluation projects, as well as training, to organisations in the third and public sector. A
We are experts in qualitative and creative research with a focus on gathering rich information about people’s experiences. Our participatory research methods empower members of a local community or service users to take the lead in gathering data, drawing conclusions and reporting their findings. Going against the grain, we intentionally don't use AI in our projects, so - while it takes more time - you know that everything we say and recommend comes from what we have heard, held, felt and found.
Led by Rowena Hay and Sabina Dewfield, Shortwork brings together a network of Research Associates with expertise drawn from a range of fields including health, social care, the built environment and the arts. The team are united by a commitment to research that does more than tick the box, but results in real change that is of benefit to individuals, organisations and communities.

I love nothing more than learning a new (and weird) way of approaching a problem.
As proof, here's my potted patchwork experience: I have a design thinking background from my time leading on research and impact at the Design Council, am a lifelong musician, have a Masters in Philsophy, and another post-grad qualification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (the Freud type!). I worked in the City as an analyst, as an interviewer for an indie fashion magazine, have a greyhound, and am now the Director of this amazing social enterprise!
