Anti-Slavery Policy Statement
Shortwork Limited is a social research and evaluation consultancy working with social enterprises, charities, funders, and public sector organisations to help create fairer, more equitable systems. We are deeply committed to social justice, community-led change, and ethical working practices. Our commitment to preventing modern slavery and human trafficking reflects our broader belief that everyone should be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
This statement sets out the steps we have taken, and will continue to take, to ensure that modern slavery and human trafficking are not taking place within our operations or supply chains.
Our Structure and Supply Chains
Shortwork Limited is a small UK-registered social enterprise with two directors and no direct employees. We operate through a network of trusted associates, freelancers, and small businesses - including community researchers, illustrators, and subject experts - all of whom are based in the UK.
Our main suppliers include UK-based SMEs providing software (such as Google Workspace, Miro, and Sembly), travel providers (e.g. UK rail operators), and occasional catering or accommodation services when working on location.
Given the nature and scale of our operations, the risk of modern slavery within our direct activities and immediate supply chain is considered low. However, we remain vigilant and committed to ensuring our practices uphold the highest ethical standards.
Our Policies and Commitments
Our values are grounded in transparency, fairness, and equity. We expect all those we work with to share these principles. In particular:
We pay fair rates to freelancers, consultants, and community researchers, and ensure payment terms are clear and timely.
We only work with suppliers and partners who comply with UK employment law and share our commitment to ethical labour practices.
We take a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and human trafficking in any form.
Due Diligence and Risk Management
Although our operations and supply chains are low-risk, we take proportionate steps to mitigate potential risks:
We review our key suppliers and partners annually to ensure they meet ethical and legal standards.
We include ethical working clauses where appropriate in contracts and partnership agreements.
We maintain open communication with our freelance network, encouraging anyone to raise concerns or report unethical practices.
Training and Awareness
Given our small size, formal staff training is not required. However, we ensure that all directors and associates are aware of the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking, and understand our responsibilities under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
Looking Ahead
We are committed to continuous improvement. In the coming year, we will:
Continue to review our procurement processes to identify any potential risks.
Explore ways to strengthen due diligence for new suppliers, particularly where sub-contracting is involved.
Share learning and resources on ethical and inclusive practice with our network and clients.
This statement has been approved by the Directors of Shortwork Limited and will be reviewed annually.
