What does Shortwork do?
Shortwork delivers mixed-method research and evaluation projects, drawing on qualitative, quantitative, and participatory approaches. We specialise in participatory action research, including training and supporting community researchers, helping organisations and communities generate insights, embed learning and plan for change.
Who do you work with?
We work with a diverse range of clients across sectors on environmental, health and cultural research and evaluation projects. These include:
Public sector organisations – councils, NHS trusts, and government agencies
Arts and cultural institutions – museums, galleries, and creative organisations and
Community-led and third-sector organisations – charities, social enterprises, co-ops, and grassroots initiatives
We also work with a range of collaborators who bring specialist expertise to our projects including:

Where do you work?
We are proudly based in Liverpool, but we work across the UK and occasionally internationally.
What is the history of Shortwork?
Shortwork was founded by Susie Hay and operated as a sole-trading practice for more than a decade before incorporating under Dr Rowena Hay in 2017. Since then, we’ve expanded with Sabina Dewfield joining as co-director in 2024, alongside a team of Research Associates.
Does Shortwork offer training?
We provide bespoke training in participatory research methods, including including supporting and mentoring community researchers.
Does Shortwork publish guides or research?
Yes! We produce reports, toolkits, and practical guides. Our latest book, A Practical Guide to Collaboration in Participatory Action Research, is available for pre-order from Policy Press. Many of our project reports, summaries, and outputs are available on our website, providing insights, key findings, and practical recommendations from our work.
